Ambient Intelligence

Ambient Intelligence is a new paradigm in Artificial Intelligence that introduces a shift in perspective as regards the role of the end user. The basic intrinsic requirement of any AmI system is the presence of pervasive and unobtrusive sensory devices, which is essential to ensure context-aware reasoning in order to act upon the environment, modify its state, and react to user-driven stimuli. In our approach a remote, distributed sensory device thus acts as the termination of a centralized sentient reasoner, where actual intelligent processing occurs; sensed data is processed in order to extract higher-level information, carrying on symbolic reasoning on the inferred concepts, and producing the necessary actions to adapt the environment to the users’ requirements. A set of actuators finally takes care of putting the planned modifications to the environment state into practice.
